Chatting with the local AI

Auxo Codex includes a chat panel that can answer questions using your vault's own notes as context — for example, "what are our current priorities?" or "who owns this project?" Answers include clickable citations back to the source notes, so you can always check where an answer came from.

On-device first

If you have a local AI model running on your Mac, Auxo Codex prefers it automatically — your questions and your notes never leave your machine. There's nothing to configure: the app detects a running local model and uses it, with no extra setup required.

When local AI isn't running

If no local model is available, the chat panel offers to use a cloud AI provider instead. This requires connecting your own API key from the chat settings — your key is stored only on your Mac and is never sent anywhere except directly to the provider you chose.

Getting started with a question

Open the chat panel and try one of the suggested prompts, or ask your own — in plain English, referencing whatever your vault covers (projects, people, processes, plans). The assistant reads across your notes to answer, and you can click any citation to open the source note directly.

Clearing a conversation

Chat history is scoped to your current session — use the clear-chat control in the panel to start a fresh conversation at any time.
